What we train
Our sessions
Beginner striking and grappling
For people new to martial arts or combat sports.
Learn the basics of both striking and grappling.
Coaching 2x a week. All sessions in the Armitage.
All sessions include 1hr striking and 1hr grappling.
All contact-based exercises are completely optional: you're always welcome to let your coach or training partner know if you'd rather sit out or modify an exercise.
Advanced MMA
Recommended for those with a year or more training in combat sports.
Learn how to apply techniques to MMA in live drills.
Coaching 2x at the Armitage. Special training at Wayfarer Academy 2x a week.
Muay Thai
Suitable for beginners.
Learn Muay Thai, the art of 8 limbs.
Drills, pads and technical sparring.
Sessions 1x a week at the Armitage. In collaboration with UoM Thai Boxing.
Grappling and BJJ
Learn BJJ and freestyle wrestling.
Learn how to apply techniques to MMA.
Sessions are 2x a week. Grappling at the Armitage. Wrestling tbd.
We know martial arts can be scary and your safety is our top priority. All training can be taken at your own pace.

How it works
- Each membership has a monthly price. This gives access to free tickets to all sessions included in the membership, on the SU website.
- If you have a membership and want to try a session not included in your membership, it is £3. If you want to trial a session and you don't have a membership, it is £6.
- Some sessions may need coach approval before attending.

Be a good teammate
Etiquette
Training etiquette
- Show up to training on time, with your ticket ready.
- Help take out and put back the mats and equipment at the start and end.
- Maintain good hygiene at training.
- If any equipment becomes dirty or damaged, clean it up or let us know.
- Listen to the coaches.
- We are all responsible for making sure training is safe and fun.
Gym culture
- Respect everyone at training; everyone is there to improve.
- Be inclusive: you learn just as much from your teammates as coaches.
- Take care of each other at socials and events.
- Help each other learn and improve constructively.
- The goal is to build a team where everyone wants to come and learn.

All measurements are body measurements. Rashguards are designed for a compression fit.
How to measure
- Chest
- Around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape level.
- Waist
- Around the narrowest part of your waist, usually just above your hips.
- Hips (women's sizes)
- Around the fullest part of your hips and bottom.
- Knuckles
- Make a fist and measure around the widest part, excluding your thumb.
